This 5-week course aims to introduce students to simple decorative techniques including making and applying slips, the use of oxides, carving, texturing, sgraffito and resist techniques. Students will also be introduced to slab building and pinching techniques in order to create the forms to be decorated. The effects of the decorative techniques will be explored in firings to earthenware (and where possible mid-fire) temperatures.

This course is suitable for those who have some skills in ceramic hand building techniques but can be adapted to beginners and more experienced students as well.

While the applied techniques will be simple, by the end of this course students will be ready to independently further explore their preferred techniques in more complex applications.
